NEWS: We are not a group - Joey B

Tonga hitmaker, Joey B, says even though he and Pappy Kojo get very well on stage, they are not a group but just individual artistes who come together to just kill it at shows.

The two have mounted the stage to perform together at several shows for sometime now giving the impression they are a group but in an interview with Showbiz on Tuesday, Joey B explained that they are not a group but just good together on stage.

“Infact, it’s more of us being used to each other all the time. There is brotherly love between us. We have a lot of fun in the studio jumping about and it’s the same thing we bring on stage when we are performing,” ha said.

Throwing light on his music career, Joey B stressed that he does not want to be tagged with any music genre but simply wants to be known as a musician. “I do all kinds of music so I am just a musician and not a hiplife or hippop artiste as some may want to call me,” he said.

Giving his views on the current music scene, Joey B believes musicians in Ghana are doing well with sound quality but the vibe is still the same, “I, however, think with time, it will get better, we are getting better lyrically though and that is a step in the right direction.”

Joey B revealed that his favourite artiste in Ghana is Ofori Amponsah and he has always admired him. “He knows how to make good music. I listen to a lot of his songs and they are always on point, the new one, Alewa is very nice and I like it. The truth is I am a huge Ofori Amponsah fan,” he said.

Perhaps, it is not surprising that when Joey B was asked who he would so badly love to do a collaboration with, he mentioned Ofori Amponsah. “I would love to do a collabo with Ofori Amponsah, it will certainly be a dream come true.”

Asked if he would like to vie for MUSIGA President in the near future, Joey B gave an emphatic no saying, “No, I don’t have that calling, I just want to be a musician.”

Taking us down memory lane, Joey B said he worked with the likes of Jay So, Hammer of the Last Two and D-Black for a couple of years before doing something on his own.

He touched on his very popular Tonga song saying it did so much for him, “ Tonga is simply a blessing, it did so much for me and it is still doing so much for me.

“It is a complete song, everything about that song is golden and I am grateful to Sarkodie for doing a good job on the song,” he said. He also mentioned his others songs Cigarette and Wave which featured Pappy Kojo as some of his all-time favourite songs. He hinted that he will release another very good song at the end of the year.

With his good looks and numerous female fans, Joey B who said he is in a relationship said he is used to his female fans, “ My fans are my family and I treat them as such, they, making time to listen to my songs is priceless and I treat them like family. You can always see me taking selfies with them whenever I am out,” he said.

Born Darryl Bannerman-Martin, Joey B who is also known as Paa Kwesi is the second and only boy among four children. His dad is from Cape Coast while his mum is an Akyem.

He attended St Theresa’s Preparatory School, Accra High School and Zenith University where he obtained a degree in Business Administration.

He urged his fans to believe in God because with Him, all things are possible, “God is the reason for everything, He is the reason I am here, all thanks goes to Him. He is the reason we are all alive so believe in Him in everything that you do,” he stated.
