7 Ghanaian artistes likely to win Grammys

The world’s most prestigious Grammys is the last dream of every focused and achievement oriented musician but grabbing the gold-plated trophy is the ‘most severe headache’ of every act.

For the past 58 years, Grammys has served as the most recognised and credible award ceremony thus, artistes go through thick and thin before making an attempt to grab a nomination or if possible, the trophy.
Renowned Beninese singer and activist Angélique Kidjo, Malian music group Tinariwen, Senegalese singer, percussionist, songwriter, composer, occasional actor, businessman and politician Youssou N’Dour, South African gospel group The Soweto Gospel Choir, Malian singer and multi-instrumentalist Ali Farka Touré, South African flautist and music composer Wouter Kellerman and South African all-male chorus Ladysmith Black Mambazo are the only Africa acts whose hardwork saw them grab the Grammys trophies.
A Ghanaian Reggae act Rocky Dawuni, who is based in Los Angeles, United States of America, on December 7, 2015 became the first Ghanaian to land a nomination with his “Branches Of The Same Tree” album for the “Best Reggae Album” award. This is seen by many music critics including myself as the biggest step a Ghanaian has taken — a giant step that goes beyond possibilities of more Ghanaian acts climbing to that stage.
Before Rocky, many Ghanaian acts have openly disclosed their dreams of achieving The Grammys which BET Award winner Sarkodie is one of them. This has been his dream from day one in his career.
However, I think some are already on the path to The Grammys. So, I bring you 7 Ghanaian acts who are likely to get Grammy nomination(s) or award(s). Check out the list below.

1. Stonebwoy

 Stonebwoy has come from afar to reach this stage of his career but still has more to do to be able to get to The Grammys. The sensational Afro-Dancehall musician has come from afar, breaking several barriers this year. From his first time BET Award win to his European tour with the prestigious Morgan Heritage band,  the “Run Go” singer has added nothing to his career but excellence this year.

2. M.anifest

 Ghanaian wordsmith, M.anifest has already shown his Grammys potentials on almost every masterpiece he drops. Well known for his multilingual wordplay and refreshing hybrid songwriting abilities, the “Some Way Bi” hit man has made Ghana proud on many international platforms. He was placed third at this year’s International Songwriting Competition (ISC); an award designated for genius writers. He has reached the stage where he needs no introduction on international platforms.

3. AJ Nelson

 AJ Nelson, a youth advocate, human right activist and rapper, has once again proven to the world that he is a replica of Kendrick Lamar in Ghana. The former GH Brothers signee who is known for his breakthrough single dubbed “Faith”, recently got everyone talking after he released empowering track titled “Power To The People” featuring Wiyaala. The song entered iTunes Top Selling artistes charts a few days after it was released and it was rated alongside Coldplay’s “Adventure Of A Lifetime”, Mr. Drastick’s “They Wanna Know”, Emma McGrath’s “Sit With Me”, Chris Brown’s “Fine By Me”, Illmaculate + OnlyOne’s “Only & Ill”, Booda French’s “The Feeling”, and Weltuntergäng + Arm & Hässlich’s “Untitled” on UK’s popular entertainment website We Plug Good Music as the “Best New Music of the Week”.
His music empowers the youth, fights against corrupt leaders and most of all strikes the evil doers. If he keeps up the pace, Grammys wouldn’t be a problem for him at all.

4. FOKN Bois

 FOKN Bois group made of Wanlov the Kubolor and M3nsa have put Ghana on the map with their energetic stage performances and songs that tell the African story, the African way. They may be controversial but their talents meet Grammys criteria. They have traveled across the world with their music and if they keep it up, Grammys will chase them.

 5. King Ayisoba

 King Ayisoba is a gem. He is not selling lately in the country but on the international market, the “I Want To See You My Father” hit man is putting Ghana on the map. With just a local guitar, Ayisoba has created variation between modern techno and self-manufactured sounds for entertainment

6. Fuse ODG

If Nigerian singer Jidenna can grab a nomination in the “World Music” category at Grammys, then it’s more than easy for Ghana’s Afrobeats star, Fuse ODG to grab more. The tree times MOBO Award and Ghana Music Awards winner has put Ghana on the world map since 2011. Though controversial sometimes, his work has received massive international recognition and has performed on several big stages across the world.

7. Wiyaala

The androgynous singer-songwriter has gotten all the potentials for Grammys. From her eclectic stage performances to her silky vocal, the Sisaala singer has gotten great talent that will sell massively on the international market.
